The Different Types Of Depression

There are many different types of depression. Depression can take many forms, and so many healthcare professionals use a number of different terms when referring to depression. Seasonal affective disorder, clinical depression, and bipolar depression are all commonly diagnosed types of depression. What really causes a lot of confusion when someone is diagnosed with depression is that it can very often overlap with another illness. Conditions such as substance abuse or an eating disorder may be confused with depression, and can make any form of depression rather hard to diagnose. The following are some very common forms of depression.

You will hear the term major depression when you are experiencing one of the depressive disorders that are severe enough to require treatment. For example, say you are very active at your local gym but have experienced some type of severe emotional trauma and start to avoid the gym at all costs. It is very likely that you could be experiencing a bout with major depression.

Another one of the major types of depression is bipolar depression (also known as manic depressive illness). Bipolar depression is commonly recognized as someone experiencing being overly happy, then suddenly becoming horribly depressed. Many doctors believe that bipolar depression is an imbalance in the brain that can often be successfully treated with medications.

One of the major types of depression that women are known to suffer from is postpartum depression. Healthcare professionals have determined that many women suffering from postpartum depression have already suffered from some form of depression previously. Most women that go through giving birth feel badly the first few days afterward. However, those that are not able to snap out of the depressive feelings can experience them for months, if not years, if not properly treated.

Of the many types of depression, a common subtype of depression is seasonal affective disorder. This form of depression seems to be tied to the way people react to the amount of sunlight that is available to them each day. Light therapy by use of special lamps is a common treatment for those suffering from seasonal affective disorder.

A very serious form of the many types of depression is psychotic depression. Those that suffer from psychotic depression very often hear voices in their head in addition to having visual delusions. Individuals that are suffering from this need to have someone help them seek treatment as soon as possible. Most sufferers are not able to think rationally, and therefore are likely to hurt themselves or others. Psychotic depression strikes about 15% of individuals suffering from major depression.

People that seem to be suffering constantly from a mild form of depression are likely to be suffering from dysthymia. People that are suffering from dysthymia can also be hit with a bout of major depression, the more severe form of depression that results in necessary close medical monitoring and aggressive treatment.

Another of the many types of depression that are very commonly suffered by women is atypical depression. This form of depression is commonly marked by experiencing things like panic attacks, overeating, and sleeping disturbances. Someone with atypical depression will feel depressed for a period of time, feel better, and then feel worse again. Atypical depression is very common in a person’s younger years, and if gone untreated will follow them into adulthood.

No matter which one of the many types of depression you might be suffering from, knowing the difference between them is the best way to get the best possible treatment. Once you know which is the best course of treatment you will know the best way to battle whichever of the many different types of depression that you might be suffering from.

How To Cure Feelings Of Depression On Young Children And Teenagers

Filed under About Depression

Clinical depression is a condition caused by chemical imbalances in the brain that make a person constantly feel aloof, negative, sad, and unmotivated. Depression can last for weeks, months, or even years. It can result from stress, certain situations, or triggered by nothing at all. Depression can affect people of any age, including teens and young children.

Young people frequently suffer from depressive disorders, which leaves parents with questions such as: what causes it, and what treatments are available? The good news is that depression is treatable and some of the most effective depression treatments come in the form of Neuro-Linguistic Programming techniques.

In the past, it was thought that younger people could not experience depression, but in reality, depression affects people of all ages. Often, depression in children and teens is triggered by events such as a relationship breakup, illness, a loss in the family, changing schools, or abuse. In some people, depression has no external cause. Depression often runs in families, meaning mothers and fathers with depression are more likely to have offspring who also suffer from depression.

There are many different forms of depression. Most children with depression have a type of major depression. This form obstructs a person’s ability to enjoy life and engage in normal activities. Some children and teens may also suffer from a milder type of depression called Dysthymic Disorder, which is a long-term type of depression with less severe symptoms than major depression. A rarer but still common type of depression is manic-depression (bipolar disorder), which is characterized by mood shifts from extreme happiness to extreme sadness.

Depression can be a problem for young people because their symptoms vary slightly from the ones adults frequently display, making it more challenging to diagnose and treat. Often, children and teens with depression will not feel sad or “depressed” as one would find in adults. Constant irritability is typically one of the biggest signs of depression in children and teens. Signs of depression may not be obvious, but may include difficulty concentrating and difficulty sleeping, exhaustion, and decreased interest in activities.

Children with depression may do poorly in school, have problems making friends, or have disciplinary problems. The effects are also pronounced for teens, who may abuse alcohol and drugs to escape their depression. Depressive disorder is no one’s fault, but those with depression do have the power to get treatment and find out how to handle their depression.

Depression treatments can range from counseling and therapy, to the use of antidepressant drugs. Group psychotherapy can be helpful for teenagers and children by providing a safe place to share their experience with others. Online services such as forums for depressed teens can also provide a source of information for teen depression and serve as a therapy group for the depressed.

Behavioral counseling can help teach people how to manage their depression. Counselors can help parents understand what causes a child’s depression. Family counseling helps educate parents on why their child has depression and what they can do to help.

In some cases, antidepressant medications are prescribed. This is only done under the supervision of a physician who will monitor the child’s health and mental state. Even though people with severe depression may have a need for antidepressants, these drugs can have undesirable side effects, especially in young people, who are still developing. This is why counseling, understanding and support from parents and professional therapists, and the use of techniques that help young people learn how to cope with their depression by themselves are considered better for helping children with depression.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) practices can be used to relieve anxiety, tension, and depression. They help people form safe and constructive coping mechanisms for reducing depression. It works for all people because it is non-invasive, does not require the use of any drugs, and is an effective form of self-therapy.

One NLP technique used to alleviate depression is the NLP Flash. This technique reprograms your unconscious mind to use the feelings that create stress and depression as triggers for thoughts that eliminate depression instead. It is a technique that even young people can learn to use to help them reduce their depression.

People with depression need not suffer. Therapeutic techniques can help depressed people of all ages find relief. NLP techniques are excellent for helping children and their families cope with stress and depression. These techniques can reduce or even eliminate depression in people of all ages.

Study Claims Exercise Does Not Decrease Depression

For years, psychologists and physicians have developed studies and conducted research on the affects of depression and exercising to increase serotonin levels, which are suggested to produce endorphins and create feelings of happiness. However, a recent study contradicts this practice and claims that when prescribed without medication, exercise does not decrease depression or its side effects.

The study is published in an August 2008 issue of The Archives of General Psychiatry, and found that individuals who exercise may be less likely to be depressed or anxious but likely not because they have been exercising, according to a news report of the study done by The New York Times. The study, conducted by Dutch researchers, followed 5,952 twins, 1,357 additional siblings and their parents, approximately 1,249 of them all found through the Netherlands Twins Registry. The individuals, who ranged in age from 18 to 50 years old, were surveyed about the amount of exercise they did and were required to respond about their feelings of depression and anxiety using a scale method.

The researchers studied both the set of twins and family members in order to better understand and distinguish between genetic and environmental effects. According to the lead author of the study and doctoral student in psychology at VU University Amsterdam, Marleen H.M. de Moor, there was no causal effect for those with depressive symptoms finding relief through exercising. Moor said that while exercise may still be a positive recommendation, it does not reduce anxious or depressive signs.

Depression: What is it?

Depression is considered an illness that occurs within the body. There are five common types of depression, according to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) including:

* Major depressive disorder, which is also known as major depression, is characterized by a major episode of depression that may continually occur and affects an individual’s ability to sleep, study, eat, find join and work.

* Seasonal affective disorder, (SAD), is often caused by the decrease of natural sunlight, which is often treated with light therapy, medication and psychotherapy.

* Psychotic depression, is when the severity of the depressive illness reaches a point where a form of psychosis becomes apparent in the form of delusions or hallucinations.

* Dysthymic disorder is considerd a long-term (usually two years or more) of less severe symptoms but continually reoccurring.

* Postpartum depression only occurs in women who have recently given birth and is common after only one month from the date of delivery.

Additionally, NIHM descries bipolar disorder that has also been previously described as manic-depressive illness. This condition occurs when an individual has extreme highs and lows within their mood cycle. The illness may cause irrational behavior and is treated with medications and psychotherapy.

Symptoms Of Depression

Symptoms can range depending on the depressive order an individual has been diagnosed, but there are common symptoms, according to the including:

* persistent aches, pains such as headaches, craps or digestive

* issues

* irritability

* persistent sadness or feelings of emptiness

* feeling continually anxious

* restlessness

* fatigue

* decreased energy

* pessimistic attitude

* feelings of hopelessness

* feeling worthless, helpless or guilty

* loss of interest in pleasurable activities including sex

* difficulty concentrating

* inability to make decisions or remember details

* overeating

* loss of appetite

* insomnia or early-morning wakefulness

* excessive sleeping

* thoughts of suicide

* suicide attempts

Treatments for Depression

Individuals affected by depression may find it necessary to seek medical attention requiring therapy or receiving pharmaceutical prescription drugs depending on the severity of their condition.

Commonly, antidepressants are among the medications that are prescribed to individuals suffering from some form of depression. Antidepressants stabilize a range of brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters such as serotonin and norepinephrine. Additionally, other antidepressants can stabilize the neurotransmitter dopamine.

Also, there is a new class of antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Some of these SSRIs have become commonplace in society and include the following:

* Fluoxetine (Prozac)

* Citalopram (Celexa)

* Sertraline (Zoloft)

There is also a similar medication group known as serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), which include:

* Duloxetine (Cymbalta)

* Venlafaxine (Effexor)

NIMH reports that SSRIs and SNRIs are more popular of the antidepressants because there have been fewer side effects than the older class of antidepressants known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). These often require individuals to adhere to significant food and medicinal restrictions in order to avoid what could be severe interactions when consuming these prescription drugs.

What Causes Depression?

Researchers at NIMH cannot attribute depression to any single cause and have found that it is probably the result of several factors combined such as:

Genetic factors (including hereditary)

* Biochemical factors

* Environmental factors (environment in which an individual is raised

* Psychological issues

While these are common causes, especially when found in combination, there is also another way in which depression can be caused. There have been several medications that have been unrelated to treating depression, but have thus caused it. Chantix (Varencline Tartrate), for example, is a smoking cessation drug that was introduced to the market in May 2006 from Pfizer. The drug had been prescribed to nearly 3 million Americans when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) began receiving reports of depression and suicidal behaviors/tendencies among patients receiving prescriptions of Chantix.

Nearly 37 suicides and more than 400 instances of depression had been reported by November 2007 from patients taking the drug. In early 2008, the company updated prescription information of the drug including the risks of mood and behavioral changes among some Chantix patients. However, if an individual has been adversely affected by these severe Chantix side effects it is important to seek the assistance of an experienced pharmaceutical lawyer who can provide details of a Chantix lawsuit.

Mental Depression and How to Talk yourself Out of it

April 14, 2009 by How To Treat Depression
Filed under About Depression

Some people call it the ‘pits’ and some people call it the ‘blues’ and some just call it ‘feeling down in the dumps’. But whatever you may call it, being depressed is a terrible feeling.

The most common types of depression are:

Major Depression, which is characterized by a sad mood, sleep disorders, and a decreased or absent appetite. Often when a person is in a major depression, the person feels a complete lack of drive and motivation and the sufferer lacks the desire to do anything in life. Some people are completely disabled by depression, and some even consider suicide.

Dysthymia: This is a less severe type of long term depression that typically does not completely disable the individual. But it prevents the person from feeling motivated and functioning at optimum levels. Sometimes people who are suffering with Dysthymia also suffer from Major Depression, and when this occurs it is called double-depression.

Manic Depression is also called Bipolar Disorder. This type of depression is not as common as Dysthymia or major depression. It involves cycles of a manic state, alternated with a depressed state. This is often a long term recurring disorder. Sometimes the mood swings occur suddenly. But generally speaking, they tend to be gradual.

There are many variations of depression; the types described here are only three of the most common.

Some of the symptoms of depression include:

Sadness; anxiety; pessimism; insomnia and other sleep disorders; feelings of worthlessness; guilt; restlessness; pain; fatigue; weight loss; headaches; and thoughts of suicide.

Sources of Depression:

As previously stated, there are several types of depression: Major Depression; Manic Depression; and Dysthymia being three of the more common forms.

Many types of depression are hereditary. Living in a stressful environment can lead to depression. A traumatic experience such as a serious loss, relationship problems, or financial trouble can also lead to depression.

Women are twice as likely to suffer from depression as men are, but scientists do not know why.

If you suffer from depression, you will want to seek the advice of your physician. He may prescribe medication for you. But keep in mind that every medication has side effects.

Wouldn’t it be phenomenal if you could regulate and eliminate your depression just by having certain thoughts? I know that this sounds too good to be true, but very often, various types of depression are caused by thinking negative thoughts.

Don’t believe me? Then try it out! It’s really quite basic and simple. Just imagine something that you feel is very troubling or sad. Go ahead, think about it right now! Then come back to this article.

Okay, so what happened? If you really focused and visualized the sad situation, you began to feel sad and a little depressed. And the longer you allow yourself to remain in that thought pattern, the sadder you will feel. As you stay in sad thoughts and keep feeling sadder, you lead yourself into a gradually intensifying depression.

The good news is that if you focus on a happy thought, then you will displace that sadness and depression and have happy feelings instead.

Listen closely now, because here are the keys to eliminating your depression: Our persistent thoughts spring forth from the unconscious mind. These are the thoughts that we find ourselves automatically thinking about during the day.

If the persistent thoughts that keep recurring in your mind are about your problems or sad experiences, then you raise your levels of anxiety, stress, and depression.

But here is the ‘Light at the end of the tunnel’: Since hypnosis can be used to alter our unconscious thoughts, NLP and self hypnosis stress management CDs will rapidly alter the way that you think, feel, and behave. The interesting thing is that the exact same techniques that work for stress management also work just as well for eliminating depression!

Now I’m going to tell you exactly how and why it is going to happen. Hypnosis is a natural state of mind. Specifically, it is the Alpha state of consciousness. We go through the Alpha state as we are falling asleep at night. And we go through it again as we wake up in the morning. We also enter the Alpha state when we are daydreaming and imagining.

The unconscious mind is the seat of our emotions, and it is like a computer; the input controls the output! Hypnosis therapy is a wonderful tool for reaching directly into the unconscious mind and reprogramming it to automatically divert you away from negative thoughts, and promote positive thinking. It’s a tool that allows you to bypass the consciousness to create positive expectations, which will in turn generate positive feelings. You can overcome depression by using hypnosis therapy.
