Depression Feedback: How does an antidepressant work?

Depression is an illness in which factors such as genetics, chemical changes in the body and external events may play an important role. Research suggests that depression may be linked to changes in the functioning of brain chemicals called neurotransmitters. Current research focuses on the serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine systems. Certain genetic factors and changes in body hormones have also been implicated in some depressive conditions. These complex biological changes can produce profound changes in your mood and behavior. Antidepressants are thought to correct some of the chemical imbalances present in a depressive illness.

Depression Feedback: I don’t know how they work, but they do. I took the generic form of prozac daily for a while. It was a low milligram. They helped me through a rough patch. The doctor also prescribed me some xanax for the really rough times, like when I felt a panic attack coming on. I rarely had to use those and I only took a half because a half worked! They basically calm you down and perk you up at the same time. There are other alternatives too. If you don’t already exercise, you should try it. It makes you feel better physically and mentally. And I should take my own advice :) I also recommend some beginner yoga. I used the Yoga for Dummies video. It really calmed me down and cleared my mind. Hoped this helped some!

Depression Feedback: Some people think a pill will change their behavior in a specific way.

I personally find that to be an insane belief.

It is possible to drug someone so they don’t feel ANY strong emotions - turn them into sort of a zombie. That’s been my observation of people on antidepressants - zombies. They can’t get motivated much or excited much about anything.

If you’re tired of thinking about something then think of something ELSE…

Depression Feedback: People suffering depression usually have an imbalance of the emotion-regulating chemicals: serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain. The medication artificially restores these chemicals to help you in sleeping and feeling better.

But you will only be “completely cured” when the brain again starts to make these chemicals naturally……that happens when the cause of depression, like trauma, loss of a loved one, a supressed memory, etc has been overcome through counselling and family support. Exercise is helpful in restoring the natural balance.

How long it takes depends on what kind of depression you have; clinical, reactive, manic, and so on.
