What should I look for in a doctor or therapist for my depression?
Answered By Editor
Although there are issues about whether
therapy, medication, or a mixture of both is
best for depression, there is just one type
of doctor who is qualified to cure depression
and other mood problems using prescription
medications: a psychiatrist.
A psychologist or counselor is also sometimes
helpful in treating depression, but they are
not medical doctors and so they cannot
prescribe medications. A psychologist
specializes in talk therapy. If you are not
sure whether you need drugs, it is still best
to start your treatment under the care of a
supervising psychiatrist.
Many psychiatrists are willing to see you and
talk to you just enough to prescribe the
right medication, while letting a
psychologist or counselor do the talk
therapy. If you do well in the talk therapy
and prefer to have just one doctor,
psychiatrists are usually able to manage this
also.
